One more introduction

Similar to a lot of the other posts, this is also my very first research methods class. I come from an undergraduate background in Engineering and about 5 years of work experience as an Information Management consultant, so the content of this class is very new to me!

I am currently working as a research assistant on a project related to disseminating health information online within the Aboriginal community. I'm also working towards creating my own thesis proposal which involves studying online discourse of parents who have children diagnosed with cancer and how they build a support network through sharing their personal experience. While I have absolutely no background in research methods, I hope that this course will help me extensively in my research assistant role, as well as in my own research project. I am curious to learn and understand how to select a research method that won't get me into trouble down the road, and how to set boundaries around what exactly will be included in my chosen technique (i.e. sample sizes, how many people should I interview, etc). I'm also interested in understanding research ethics, and how to determine whether to seek REB approval or not.

I thoroughly enjoyed the 'salsa dancing' chapters assigned for this week, and have developed a subconscious bias towards Luker over Knight (although I understand Knight's ideas are perhaps useful in certain situations). Looking forward to getting deeper into discussions throughout the course...
